A giant seal commandeers a canoe to rest

This super relaxed seal doesn’t care about the world as he looks like he’s taken a dinghy for a leisurely cruise in the sea – complete with a pair of oars. Karis Hedges was returning from Skomer Island in Pembrokeshire when she was stunned to notice a seal ‘relaxing’ in a rubber boat.

The quick-witted 26-year-old started to walk away and captured some ‘lucky photos’ of the marine mammal within seconds, just as the boat came ashore at Martin’s Haven. Photos taken by the full-time photographer show the brass seal lying on its side, gazing up at its viewers – with an expression that almost says “and?” Do you have a problem?’.

The large animal, obviously indifferent to his audience, then closed his eyes to bask in the sun and looked completely relaxed.

Karis, from Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire, said: “I was coming back from Skomer Island and when we got to the harbor area we saw the seal relaxing in the little dingy. I was quite surprised to see the I thought he was really cute that he was totally out of phase with anyone and chilled out not caring about the world.

“His expression is like ‘and? Do you have a problem?’ Like it was the most normal thing. The boat was coming ashore so it was moving pretty fast so it was really a fluke. I only had a few seconds to catch up with it.

Karis Hedges captured the incredible photo in Wales

Karis has been photographing since the age of ten and focuses her work on the nature and landscapes of Wales. She said the seal claimed the dinghy the main boat was using to bring the crew ashore and suspects they probably had to evict the surprise guest at the end of the day.

She shared the photo taken on her Nikon D7100 online where commenters remarked on how hilarious they found it. One said: “Some major cooling going on there. Love it.”

Another remarked: “Ha you got it – great photo – it was so funny to see it wasn’t it? The poor boatmen should have gotten into a very smelly dinghy at the end of their shift work!”

Another said: “Wait…what!!? Amazing!” A fourth remarked: “A prize-winning shot that.”
